As someone who shoots self-portraits, I’m almost offended when someone calls them ‘selfies.’ They’re not selfies. They’re self-portraits. Two very different types of photos.
So, what’s the difference?
This is a selfie.
I consider selfies to be photos taken with the person actually holding the camera when they’re taking the photo. No special lighting, really. Just what ever available light is around.
This is a self-portrait.
Self-portraits have a little bit more work put into them. For one, they’re not taken with the camera still in hand. Usually, it’s set on a tripod or flat surface and a timer (and sometimes remote) is used. It’s about the lighting, the mood, the styling. It’s a more well-thought out photo than that of a selfie.
So no, seflies are not quite the same as self-portraits.
